Burris denied seat in US Senate to succeed Obama
Updated Jan 06, 12:48 PM
From Associated Press/AP Online
WASHINGTON - Roland Burris failed in his bid to take President-elect Barack Obama's Illinois Senate seat on Tuesday in a scripted piece of political theater staged just before the opening of the 111th Congress.
But Burris, who would be the Senate's only black member, also said he was considering a federal lawsuit to force Senate Democrats to seat him.
That Secretary of the Senate Nancy Erickson turned away Burris was no surprise; Senate Democrats had warned for weeks that if Burris showed up to be sworn in on Tuesday without the signature of the Illinois secretary of state, he would be turned away.

Saints QB Brees is AP Offensive Player of Year
Updated Jan 06, 02:26 PM
From Associated Press/AP Online
NEW YORK - Drew Brees understood what breaking a record set by Dan Marino would mean to the New Orleans Saints.
So coming up 15 yards short was disappointing to the Saints quarterback, who won The Associated Press 2008 NFL Offensive Player of the Year award Tuesday.
Brees threw for 5,069 yards, 15 fewer than Marino's 1984 mark and only the second time someone has eclipsed 5,000 yards passing in a season.
